Morzine

Morzine is located in the French Alps in the Haute-Savoie department of south-eastern France. The village sits in the mountains between the ski resorts Les Gets and Avoriaz and is close to the Switzerland border. Morzine is about an hour and 15 minutes away by car from Geneva Airport in Switzerland. Lake Geneva is just 45 minutes away.

Morzine is one of the main resorts in Les Portes du Soleil, an international ski area that straddles the Swiss and French border. It’s the largest of its kind in the world, representing 12 alpine resorts across France and Switzerland.

The nearest airport to Morzine is Geneva Airport over the border in Switzerland. The transfer time from there is approximately one hour and 15 minutes, weather conditions permitting. Hunter Chalets customers can book private or group transfers to their chalet, just ask our concierge team and we can arrange this for you.

An alternative airport is Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport in France. However, bear in mind that the transfer times take around two hours and 30 minutes. We recommend arranging a private transfer for your comfort, as public transport or coaches are likely to take twice as long.

We have also had guests fly into Chambery, Grenoble, Lyon, Milan and Zurich, though the vast majority of our guests use Geneva Airport as it is the closest to Morzine.

The Morzine and Les Gets ski area is due to partially open on 14 December 2024 for a pre-opening week, depending on snow conditions.
The Morzine ski area will open continuously from Saturday 21 December 2024 through to Sunday 6 April 2025. Depending on snowfall, the Morzine lift network may open on weekends before or after these dates to extend the season. All opening and closing dates are subject to change. Once the ski lifts open, Morzine has a festive buzz and the ski season is in full swing!

Neighbouring Avoriaz officially opens on 13 December 2024, though the ski resort is expected to open earlier if snowfall is good. Avoriaz usually stays open until around the 21st of April. You can stay in Morzine and add our 24-hour resort driver service to your stay and we can take you to the Prodains lift, which takes you up to Avoriaz. It takes around 8 minutes by car from Morzine to the Prodains cable car, depending on snow conditions.

Morzine is popular in winter and summer. In winter, there are lots of things to do in Morzine when the ski season is in full-swing and the resort is rated among the best for families. Christmas is magical as activities include ice-skating, sleigh rides and a chance to meet Santa. There are also events including Rock the Pistes Festival, an open-air, high-altitude music festival on the pistes of Portes du Soleil, so you can dance in the snow under bright blue skies. Summer in Morzine is a great time of year if you love walking, paddleboarding, big scenery and being in the great outdoors. The alpine village is popular with hikers and mountain bikers, while families can swim in Lac de Montriond, try tree-top forest adventures and seek thrills on the mountain luge. The village is easy to walk around and all of our Morzine chalets are within walking distance of the centre of Morzine. Free buses run around the resort in both seasons and Le Petit Train can also take you around the resort’s streets. Many of our chalets in Morzine have parking, so please ask for our chalet recommendations if you are driving to Morzine.

In winter, we also offer a 24-hour resort driver service. At any time, call or WhatsApp our driver team and we can pick you up from bars, restaurants or take you to the ski lifts. Our drivers can take you anywhere in Morzine and Les Gets, as well as to the Ardents and Prodains ski lifts (just outside these resorts). Our 24-hour driver service is included with our catered ski chalet stays and can be added as an extra cost for guests staying in our self-catered ski chalets.

Yes! Morzine is great for beginners. Catch the Pléney gondola from the centre of Morzine and, at the top, you’ll find a couple of restaurants and the Tapis de Nabor Magic Carpet. Magic Carpets are great for beginners, as you can simply step onto them and save your energy before reaching the beginner slope! This Magic Carpet will take you up to the original Viking Magic Carpet. Step onto this and it will take you, at ground level, to the top of the beginner’s slope. This makes it easy for newbies to keep doing a loop and is where many beginner ski lessons take place. We are currently awaiting the opening dates for summer 2025. From the end of May, Morzine usually opens the lifts at the weekends only for a few weeks. The Morzine-Les Gets lift network, including the Pléney gondola, usually opens daily from around the 14 June to 15 September.

The Super Morzine gondola lift, on the opposite side of the village, usually opens around the 15 June to mid September. Pointe de Nyon lift, taking you up to Le Pas de l’Aigle lookout point, often opens between the first week of July and the first week of September.
